The SparkFun OpenScale receives an IoT upgrade with an on-board ESP32-PICO-MINI!
Hello everyone and welcome back to another Friday Product Post here at SparkFun Electronics! This we, we are "scaling" up one of favorite weighs load cell sensors by adding the capabilities to connect it with the Internet of Things via Bluetooth® or WiFi. The new SparkFun OpenScale - IoT, updates our classic OpenScale design with the reliable ESP32-PICO-MINI from our friends over at Espressif. With this board, you'll be able to remove all the unnecessary cables and allows you to focus on the only ones that matter, the ones connected to you favorite load cell and temperature sensor! While we're here we'll take a look at some of our other weight sensors and ADC boards, too!
Building a custom, high-accuracy scale shouldn't require writing complex code from scratch. The SparkFun OpenScale - IoT takes the hassle out of measuring weight and temperature with an easy-to-use, wireless solution built around the powerful ESP32-PICO-MINI. This updated version of the original SparkFun OpenScale supports multiple load cell types and lets users access the device via multiple interfaces of their choosing. That means, regardless of whether you are monitoring the static load of a beehive over several months or need to precisely weigh the right amount of beans for the perfect cup of coffee, this board turns any standard load cell into a fully functional, wirelessly connected weighing system.
To ensure you get the most accurate data possible, the OpenScale - IoT combines multiple sensing technologies into a single footprint. The onboard HX711 acts as a 24-bit ADC, an integrated TMP102 sensor to log ambient temperature, and it even has ports for an external three-wire temperature sensor, our Load Cell Combinator, and more!
The SparkFun OpenScale is still a straightforward, open-source solution that removes the complexity of measuring weight (even when temperature is taken into account). By combining a microcontroller, a precision ADC, and USB-to-serial conversion on a single board, the OpenScale lets you turn any standard four- or five-wire load cell (or four load sensors in a Wheatstone bridge) into a fully functional DIY scale.

With its on-board NAU7802, the SparkFun Qwiic Scale acts as an all-in-one amplifier and Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC). It effortlessly translates the minuscule resistance changes from a standard load cell into an easily readable digital signal, allowing you to accurately measure the weight of an object directly from your microcontroller.

The SparkFun HX711 Load Cell Amplifier acts as the bridge between your microcontroller and a load cell, allowing you to measure weight with high accuracy. By reading subtle changes in resistance, this board enables you to create everything from industrial scales to simple process control systems (even a dog treat dispenser).
