We are pleased to introduce the newest variation of our popular Experiential Robotics Platform: the AgXRP!
Hello everyone and welcome back to another Friday Product Post here at SparkFun Electronics! It's another red-letter day for us, because today we FINALLY get to announce the newest variation of our popular Experiential Robotics Platform: the AgXRP! With this complete ecosystem of agriculturally focused kits, hardware, and components, you will be able to build an automated soil moisture system while learning about robotics, automation, and agriculture technology. Today, we are releasing four kits: the AgXRP Starter Kit, the AgXRP Pump & Soil Moisture Sensor Expansion Pack, and DIY versions of each of them that allow you to 3D print your own frames and enclosures. Following that, we are also going to talk about the parts that you can pick up individually from these kits!
AgXRP is currently in beta and represents the first complete pass of the system. The platform is fully functional, but this release serves as a foundation for future refinement and expansion. We welcome thoughtful feedback from users. Your experience, ideas, and real-world use cases will help shape the next evolution of AgXRP.
Imagine a classroom where students do not just read about the future of agriculture, they build it. The AgXRP Starter Kit is an open-source, autonomous robotics platform that bridges the gap between STEM education and sustainable farming. By utilizing affordable electronics and modular 3D printing, this kit provides an accessible system that turns complex precision agriculture into an engaging, hands-on learning experience. Students will gain practical skills in programming, data analysis, and automation as they design, build, and optimize their own small-scale smart farms.
This kit goes beyond basic robotics by providing curriculum that integrates robotics, precision agriculture, and horticultural science:
As technology in modern farming advances, it’s essential that educational tools evolve to prepare the next generation of farmers to meet global food demands. From coding sensors to optimizing harvest cycles, this kit equips students to explore automation, sustainability, and data-driven agriculture, all while growing their own food and deepening their understanding of the technology shaping our future.
Scale up your agricultural automation with the AgXRP Pump & Soil Moisture Sensor Expansion Pack. Designed to combine with the AgXRP Starter Kit shown above, this expansion allows you to add a completely independent watering zone to your smart farm. By adding an additional pump and soil sensor, students can experiment with different plant types, compare watering schedules, and monitor varying soil conditions side-by-side. You can add up to three AgXRP Pump & Soil Moisture Sensor Expansion Packs to your base AgXRP Starter Kit, allowing you to automate and monitor four independent planting zones at the same time!
We are fully aware of the geo-political climate in the world today. Costs are up and are showing no signs of slowing, that's exactly why we are also releasing these two kits. These "DIY" versions of the AgXRP Starter Kit and Pump & Soil Moisture Sensor Expansion Pack only include the essential electronic hardware and tubing, but they do NOT come with physical frames or enclosures. This is especially handy if you have access to a 3D printer, because you can use our free open-source files to print the enclosures and structural supports yourself!
While this environmental Qwiic sensor has been available fore a little over a month now, we thought it would be a good idea to take another look now that you know it's a crucial board for AgXRP to operate! This capacitive version of the Qwiic Soil Moisture Sensor solves the problem of standard soil moisture sensors corroding after just a few weeks in the dirt. Instead of relying on exposed metal leads that degrade over time, this breakout measures moisture levels using a capacitive plate safely embedded within the board, and managed by the CY8CMBR3102 Capsense® Express™ controller. This design makes it much more corrosion-resistant, ensuring a significantly longer lifespan for your connected garden and agricultural projects.
This simple Hobby Motor with Encoder provides one of the easiest ways to add motion and feedback to your robotics projects. Its single direct-current (DC) gearmotor features an integrated Hall effect speed encoder, allowing your microcontroller to accurately track the motor's rotation and speed. Rather than simply applying power and hoping your robot moves correctly, the encoder provides the critical feedback needed for precise autonomous navigation and speed adjustments.
Get consistent and predictable power levels for your electronics with this 9V, 2A Wall Adapter Power Supply. Designed to easily integrate into higher-power projects, this switching "wall wart" ensures your circuits get exactly 9V of direct current. Because the output is fully regulated, you never have to worry about the dangerous 14V voltage spikes that are common in older unregulated supplies.
These Deep Groove Ball Bearings are essential components for a wide range of general-purpose machinery, axles, and rotating devices. Their deep-groove design supports both radial and axial loads while maintaining low friction during rotation, making them a reliable option for multiple applications.
That's it for this week! We hope you find AgXRP as interesting and educational as we do! If you aren't already a subscriber to our New Product Newsletter, you really should be. As always, we can't wait to see what you make (especially with these new kits)! Shoot us a tweet @sparkfun, or let us know on Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn. Please be safe out there, be kind to one another! Happy hacking!
