Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself. My Name is DataLogger IoT!

The SparkFun DataLogger IoT has just received its v1.5 firmware update, and with it, a new way to read its documentation, and its very own hub of information!

Whether you are monitoring a remote agricultural site or tracking high-speed motion in the lab, the SparkFun DataLogger IoT and DataLogger IoT - 9DoF are designed to get your data from the real world to the cloud without writing a single line of code. We are excited to announce the release of Firmware v1.5, a significant update that expands the ecosystem's sensing capabilities and improves the overall reliability of your logging projects.

Along with this firmware release, we have moved our online documentation to the new SparkFun Documentation site (the same one we introduced a few weeks ago) and launched a dedicated DataLogger IoT Information Page to serve as your central hub for FAQs, compatible sensors, streaming services, and more!

The SparkFun DataLogger IoT is a data logger that comes preprogrammed and ready to use immediately - no programming, no setup - just plug in the board, add a supported Qwiic sensor or two and start logging data. The built-in firmware automatically detects attached sensors, performs any setup and starts logging sensor data. And with minimal configuration, the DataLogger IoT can connect to a local WiFi network and post data to a wide range of IoT data services.

What Comes In v1.5

Firmware v1.5 introduces several new ways to capture data, making the DataLogger IoT more versatile than ever:

  • Serial Logging: Added support to log input values from an externally connected UART (RX/TX) serial port.
  • Ana-logging: You can now log values directly from an analog pin, including native support for the SparkFun Soil Moisture Sensor.
  • New Spectral Support: The SparkFun AS7343 Spectral Sensor is now automatically recognized and supported.
  • Quick Info: A new quick command allows you to output the firmware build date directly for easier version tracking.

We’ve added more granular control over when your data is logged, which is vital for power saving and precision timing:

  • External Interrupts: Trigger a logging event based on an external hardware interrupt.
  • GNSS Synchronization: Support for triggering logging events using the PPS (Pulse Per Second) output from a connected GNSS sensor.
  • Source Labeling: A new log event trigger source label option allows you to identify exactly what triggered a specific entry in your data output.

This update also focuses on data integrity and back-end stability:

  • System Precision: We corrected and validated ISO8601 date formatting and fixed issues related to epoch ticks output values.
  • IoT Reliability: Fixed connection timeout issues specifically for the ThingSpeak IoT driver.
  • Debugging: Improved verbose logging now available via the menu system.
  • Core Updates: The entire system has moved to the latest version of the SparkFun Flux SDK for improved performance.

Boards Compatible with the DataLogger IoT

Boards Compatible with the DataLogger IoT

DataLogger IoT automatically scans and configures dozens of Qwiic sensors with absolutely no soldering or programming required. With today's update, the list of boards now expands beyond Qwiic as well! Currently, auto-detection is supported across a variety of categories including GNSS/PNT, Distance, Movement, Environmental, and more!

If you're curious whether a board is plug-and-play-ready with DataLogger IoT, we've tagged the product pages (see below for example) that are capable, so you can tell just by looking! The product ecosystem is constantly growing, so make sure to check back often!

Cloud Services

Supported DataLogger IoT Cloud Services

Take your data global using the onboard 2.4GHz WiFi connection thanks to the on-board ESP32-WROOM-32E Module. The DataLogger can sync with popular IoT services, allowing you to easily push your choice of data. Currently, the following IoT services are supported:

Ready to get started? Overall, the SparkFun DataLogger IoT is ready for operation and requires no programming or software development. Just plug in a supported sensor and beging logging data to the serial console. With a little additiona setup, data is logged to a variety of common IoT data services as well as to an on-board SD card.
