Get In-Line with Our New Qwiic Current Sensors

The INA228 and INA237 now have their own official Qwiic boards!

Hello everyone and welcome back to another Friday Product Post here at SparkFun Electronics! This week, we have two new Qwiic boards to show you that feature the INA228 or INA237 (depending on which version you choose) from Texas Instruments. These two boards provide in-line current sensing for whatever project you're working on and are highly accurate with one being even more so than the other. The SparkFun Qwiic Current Sensors make it easy to monitor DC current and power with high precision over I2C. These Qwiic breakouts feature the INA237 or INA228 digital power monitor from Texas Instruments, which measures current, bus voltage, temperature, and power for an in-line DC input using a 16-bit (INA237) or 20-bit (INA228) delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter (ADC).

Each version of this Current Sensor includes both a 3-pin screw terminal and a pair of Qwiic connectors to allow for a solderless power monitor setup using the Qwiic ecosystem. While A 15 mΩ shunt resistor comes pre-populated on the board, we've also provided through-hole pins that allow for a custom shunt resistor value if needed! And if you ever need to know which version of the board you have, the specific version is noted by the box in the top left corner of the board.

Measuring high-voltage AC current doesn't have to mean splicing into live, dangerous wires. This non-invasive current sensor, also known as a split-core current transformer or current clamp, lets you measure exactly how much current is passing through an electrical load by simply clamping it around the supply line. By acting as an inductor, the coil responds to the magnetic field generated by the current-carrying conductor, providing a safe and highly effective way to monitor your power usage.
